2022 will represent a key year for wireless connectivity innovation as Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and Ultra-Wideband adoption accelerates across a growing number of end markets. ABI Research forecasts that next year Wi-Fi 6 will reach well over 1.5 billion annual chipset shipments, while 6 GHz enabled Wi-Fi 6E chipsets are forecasted to nearly triple year on year.

While 5G connectivity is grabbing the consumer technologies headlines, the market is also witnessing a massive uptake of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. Despite UWB being early in its ecosystem development, it is fast becoming a major short-range wireless technology for use across many applications, including smartphones, wearables, tablets, mobile accessories, and other consumer electronics.

New research from Parks Associates reports more than 12 million US households have cancelled their home broadband service and use only mobile broadband for their internet needs. Adoption and Perception of Broadband finds there are more than 15 million households in the US that have only a mobile broadband service, which includes more than three million households that have never had a home internet subscription.

Parks Associates' Smart Market Product Assessment: Networked Cameras reports 68% of owners self-installed their networked camera in Q4 2018, compared to 49% in Q4 2016. This shift toward DIY options comes as both ease of use and retail availability appear to be driving growth in these product areas.
